How It Works

This calculator estimates the total cost of a 3D print by combining filament material cost and electricity consumption.

Filament Cost

The filament cost is calculated from the model weight and the price per kilogram of filament:

  • Filament cost = (model weight in grams / 1000) × price per kg
  • A configurable waste factor accounts for purge lines, priming blobs, support material, and occasional failed prints

Electricity Cost

The electricity cost is based on your printer's power draw and how long the print takes:

  • Energy used = printer wattage × print time in hours / 1000 (kWh)
  • Electricity cost = energy used × rate per kWh

Typical Printer Power Consumption

  • Small FDM printers (Ender 3, Prusa Mini): 100–150 W
  • Standard FDM printers (Prusa MK4, Bambu Lab P1S): 150–250 W
  • Large / enclosed FDM printers: 250–400 W
  • Resin printers (SLA/MSLA): 50–150 W
